Mentor Visit!

11/12/18

Last week in ISM, I had my first Mentor visit! I got to go into the lab again, but this time there were so many more people, all intensely focusing on their projects. One thing I found so interesting and heart warming was that everyone in the lab was from all over the world, not just from america. People from Japan, china, India, Mexico, all coming together in this lab to push our understanding of neuroscience forward and in the end help save lives. In the Lab, I got to see some techniques used to make cell cultures for the FRET machine, which costs more than my life and my brother’s combined. There is also a huge freezer room, which is a measly -80°C inside. The freezers held ground up brains of people who have signed to give their organs to science and some other materials.

I love getting to talk to my mentor about my ideas and I never feel pressured to hold back my questions even if they, to my mentor, could be stupid. I feel lucky to have this mentor because he is so encouraging and willing to drop all the information he has. I am looking forward to my next mentor meeting and feel like the future is bright on my understanding of Alzheimer's disease.
