Holistic Approach to Alzheimer's Disease
Polyphenols
Polyphenols are chemical groups naturally found in fruits and vegetables. Polyphenols have many benefits in the body such as being an antioxidant and reducing inflammation. (1) They have proven beneficial to reduce blood pressure and bad cholesterol. There have been connections to increased consumption of polyphenols to benefit patients with Alzheimer’s disease. (2) A total of 1,640 subjects who were initially dementia free were monitored over a 10 year period. The results came back as the higher intake of flavonoids (a type of polyphenol) led to a better cognitive evaluation over the 10 year period. (3) In another study, a population prospective study showed that “Alzheimer’s disease was 0.24 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.09-0.61) comparing subjects who drank juices at least 3 times per week with those who drank less often than once per week with a hazard ratio of 0.84 (95% CI, 0.31-2.29) for those drinking juices 1 to 2 times per week (P for trend < .01). “ This means that the increased consumption fruit and vegetable juice showed a delay on the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. (4) Polyphenols are also known to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, which make gives them the neuroprotective properties to offset diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, aging and cardiovascular disease.
